Digital tacho - VU download limit extended to 90 days

On 6 April 2015, the UK tachograph legislation regarding the digital vehicle unit (VU) download period changed.

The maximum legal limit for downloading tachograph data from the VU has increased from the 56 days to 90 days. The ruling applies to both passenger and good vehicles, and the limit for the driver card remains the same.

This brings the UK in line with the rest of the EU, and will certainly help fleets whose vehicles spend significant amounts of time away from base.

It may help operators whose vehicle safety inspections (PMI) are at intervals of eight weeks or more. This time frame means fleets can download the digital tacho data as part of the inspection (which is already fairly standard).

There is an obvious benefit to analysing the digital data from the VU tachograph. It is the most effective way of finding out whether the vehicle has been driven without a driver card inserted — information you can’t get from analysing driver cards on their own.

This is where our OPTAC3 tachograph analysis software comes into its own. The web account is only £1 per driver per week (after set up), and gives you unlimited downloads. Find out more or sign up for a free trial today.
